Forest Industries Training Institute (FITI)

The Forest Industries Training Institute (FITI) is located in Moshi Municipality along Viwanda Road about 3 kilometres form Moshi Bus stand. Historically, FITI was established in 1975 with the financial assistance of Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

The responsibilities of FITI at the time of its inception was to train Technicians needed in the running of state owned Industry known as Tanzania Wood Industry Cooperation (TWICO).

In 1980 up to 1988 Finnish International Development Agency (FINNIDA) financed the Institute to offer Vocational Education and Training (VET) levels.

In 1988 to 1993 the Institute was totally sponsored by the government of Tanzania to offer long course training. Certificate courses offered by that time included: Sawmilling and Saw-doctoring, Logging, Woodworking and Forest Machine Mechanics. Long course training was closed in 1993 due to economic crises.

In 2003 the Institute started to offer certificate in Mechanical Wood Industries. In 2015 the Institute changed the former course to offer Basic Technician Certificate (NTA level 4), Technician Certificate (NTA level 5) and Ordinary Diploma (NTA level 6) in Forest Industries Technology. The Institute also conduct researches and offer consultancy services in forestry and forest industries.

Currently the institute is piloting a curriculum for Wood Processing Attendant level I – III.

FITI is fully accredited by National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) and has Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) Certification of Registration to conduct Vocational Education and Training (VET).
