During the monitoring of the national examinations, The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) observed candidates using different versions of Qualitative Analysis Guides (QAG) in the Chemistry practicals, Mathematical Tables and Mathematical Formulae (MF). It was noted that, some of the guides were written by different authors and were not approved by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
It was also noted that, some of the guides had technical errors such as incorrect chemical symbols and formulae, inconsistent information and typographic errors. This guide was therefore developed in order to have a standard document that will be used by candidates when writing their Chemistry practical examinations at Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) and Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE).
The NECTA’s Exam gudes is based on the 2010 Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Chemistry Syllabus and will be effectively used in the examination from 2018.
Prospective candidates are therefore encouraged to read and use these booklets effectively so that they can be conversant with the procedures indicated and be in a good position of using it properly when writing their examinations.
MATHEMATICAL TABLES AND FORMULAE (For Ordinary and Advanced Levels
Secondary Education)
This booklet was prepared to address the shortcomings noted in Mathematical Tables (MT) which were used in National Examinations. It was observed that candidates used Mathematical Tables and Mathematical Formulae (MF) in National Examinations which were different from one school to another.
The documents had different contents, produced in different formats, and by different authors. Some of these documents had many tables, formulae; and contained worked examples while others did not have.
The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) has prepared this booklet containing MT and MF in order to have a common standard document. This document brings uniformity to all candidates in examinations and fairness among candidates. The document aims to help candidates to perform various computations while answering questions.
Despite the fact that the use of calculators is growing rapidly, the need of mathematical tables is still inevitable. This booklet is the only authorized tool that will be used in all national examinations in solving mathematical problems. On the other hand, the candidates who are allowed to use calculators may use non programmable calculators only.
It is expected that the booklet will be useful to candidates, students and other people in contexts where these tables and formulae are applicable
QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS GUIDE FOR THE FOR THE ADVANCED CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION EXAMINATION ACSEE

Prospective candidates are therefore encouraged to read and use this booklet effectively so that they can be conversant with the procedures indicated and be in a good position of using it properly when writing their examinations.
It is also hoped that the guide will give an extra support to teachers on conducting analytical experiments. Teachers are therefore encouraged to take advantage of this guidance model in assessing learners so as to harmonise their qualitative analytical procedures and those used by the Council.
QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS GUIDE FOR THE CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION EXAMINATION (CSEE).
During the conduct of National Examinations in Chemistry practicals, The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) observed that, candidates from different centres have been using different versions of Qualitative Analysis Guides to identify ions in the given unknown compounds. Some of the guides used were not approved by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology.
Further Follow up by the NECTA revealed that, those guidelines had incorrect chemical symbols and formulae, inconsistent information and typographic errors. It was also revealed that, the same guides are used by Chemistry teachers in teaching practical lessons in schools, hence inconsistency in delivering the subject content to students.
The National Examinations Council has therefore prepared this Qualitative Analysis Guide booklet to address those challenges. The major objective is to have a uniform guide which will be used by candidates when writing their Chemistry practical examinations at ordinary level secondary education.
This Guide is based on 2010 ordinary level secondary education Chemistry syllabus and will be effectively used from 2018 Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE). It is hoped that, this booklet will give an extra guidance to teachers on conducting analytical experiments during teaching and learning process.
Teachers and prospective candidates are therefore encouraged to use this booklet effectively so that they can be conversant with the procedures indicated and finally be in a good position of using it properly when doing and writing their examinations.
