Rangeland Management Program Officer

Tanzania People and Wildlife Fund (TPW) is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife
and important natural habitats through a community-driven approach. TPW helps rural communities develop
their skills and abilities to protect natural resources in a manner that maximizes their benefits from these
landscapes while also preserving ecological integrity. Emphasizing the critical importance of community-led
initiatives, the organization provides information, training and service level support to its rural constituencies to
strengthen local institutions and community-driven actions for natural resource management and wildlife
conservation.

 

TPW operates from the Noloholo Environmental Center on the Maasai Steppe in northern Tanzania. Sharing a
boundary with Tarangire National Park, this center acts as TPW’s regional headquarters as well as an educational
center where rural community members improve their understanding of the environment and develop hands-on
skills in natural resource management. From this center,

TPW operates programs in four major programmatic areas:

1) wildlife conservation and human-wildlife conflict prevention,

(2) youth environmental education and adult capacity building & training,

(3) natural resource conservation and rangeland management, and

(4) environmentally-sustainable conservation enterprise and development.

Rangeland Management Program Officer at Tanzania People and Wildlife

 

Position Description:

TPW is seeking a passionate, energetic and hard-working individual to fill the position of Rangeland
Management Program Officer as a member of TPW’s Sustainable Rangelands team. The successful applicant will
assist with TPW’s Sustainable Rangelands Initiative through capacity building of community rangeland monitors,
participation in community feedback meetings, participation in rangeland management activities, and other
projects as they arise. We are looking for a person with a strong interest in both traditional and innovative
methodologies for collecting and analyzing rangeland quality data for internal and external reports. The
successful candidate must have impressive communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a
multi-cultural environment with diverse stakeholders. This position will be based at the Noloholo Environmental
Center but will require travel to remote program areas with limited facilities; applicants should enjoy a balance
of field and office work.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Assist TPW to enhance the organization’s capacity in rangeland management so that it can better
achieve its community-based conservation goals and objectives.
Engage with TPW-supported rangeland monitoring officers in across Northern Tanzania
Provide assistance to TPW’s rangeland management team in the oversight and implementation of
community rangeland monitoring
Assist with preparations for rangeland monitoring feedback meetings in over 10 villages
Assist with the start-up of TPW’s Sustainable Rangelands Initiative in new villages, including preliminary
site assessments, sample selection, pilot monitoring, and rangeland monitor training
Assist with implementing community-driven rangeland projects
Build and maintain partnerships with pastoral committees, communities, government agencies, and
other stakeholders
Assist with the development of maps and rangeland feedback reports
Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications:

The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in rangeland management,
environmental management, natural resources management, or conservation science. We are looking for an
individual with the ability to learn quickly, work in a team, and collaborate with diverse communities and
government agencies. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in rangeland management,
and community engagement.

Required:

Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in one of the above fields
Proven experience in pastoral community engagement
Proven experience working with local and regional government stakeholders
Strong interpersonal skills, including training and capacity building, and respect for other cultures
Experience with community-based conservation
Willingness to live and work in the field (must be willing to camp)
Excellent spoken and written English skills
Preferred:

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS or QGIS
Reports to: TPW Chief Program Officer

Salary and Benefits: Full-time position based on experience and qualifications; salary commensurate with
experience. Basic housing and food provided onsite.
