Sustainability Manager – Southern
Taylor Winch Tanzania. [TWT] is a member of the Volcafe group, the coffee division of ED&F Man. Through its sustainability initiatives and certification schemes, Taylor Winch Tanzania aims to actively contribute to improving sustainable coffee production in Tanzania and ultimately creating better livelihoods for coffee farmers.
We are now looking for a Sustainability Manager to join our team.
As Sustainability Manager of the Southern Region you will be responsible for all scheme related business in the operational area of the scheme. This includes but is not limited to:
- Staff supervision and capacity building
You will directly work with a growing field team. You are responsible for their day to day supervision, work planning and monitoring. Their work plans should be in line with the scheme goals and other targets as set by yourself and the General Manager. You must ensure that each team member is accountable and their work measured and monitored in accordance to their job descriptions. You should also play an active lead role in their development and building the capacity of the team.
You are responsible for the overall success of the Southern scheme in terms of certification. This includes compliance of the whole scheme and its farmers with the certification standard(s) used by the scheme and the Chain of Custody that guarantees traceability of the purchased coffee. Together with the GM and FD you will be responsible for planning internal and external inspections and any other paperwork related to certification. Together, you will be responsible for the development of the scheme over time in terms of farmer numbers, certified coffee volumes purchased and implementation of activities that will improve farmer and scheme performance. You will be responsible for the development of relationship with existing farmer organizations (AMCOS) in the scheme, for building their capacity to deliver quality coffee, and for recruitment of new farmer organizations to the scheme.
It will be your responsibility to keep up to date with the certification standards – this means researching, studying and preparing all technical material before carrying out any scheme work, and ensuring all field staff are updated in current certification practice.
- Volcafe Way
As the Scheme Manager you will be responsible for guiding and leading the team on the internal Volcafe Way initiatives which flow through all that we do within our Sustainability team and practices. You will need to create innovative and flexible solutions to support the implementation and success of Volcafe Way across your region working closely with the Project Manager of TWT, the management team of TWT and the Volcafe Way Regional/Global Management team.
- Identification of challenges and finding solutions
You will be responsible for identification of challenges that may present a risk to the success of the scheme and will actively identify solutions for these challenges together with your team. You will also actively participate in developing strategies and activities for the sustainability department to develop and continuously improve delivery and results for the team, the scheme and the communities in which we operate.
As well as this you must also actively celebrate the recognize the successes of your team and sustainability initiatives put in place by providing feedback to your team as well as to Management so that great performance can be recognized and rewarded.
- Donor Reporting:
You will have an active role in providing communication to donors, certification bodies and auditors. You will be responsible for contributing data on the southern scheme and preparing draft sections on the scheme, which will be incorporated in the final reports prepared by either the Sustainability Manager or the Coffee Agronomist.
As the Scheme Manager you will operate closely with the finance team on all matters regarding finance. You will be required to prepare and present an annual financial budget for the sustainability team in your region, with the aim of optimizing company costs, and once approved you will take ownership of implementing and managing that budget. This role will also handle day to day cash requisition approvals and petty cash needs.
You will be required to report all finances on a monthly basis to the Finance Team of TWT. Alongside the finance reports, you will be required to report the team´s monthly execution against the goals, as well as provide evidence of your follow-up and reporting of the challenges faced by the team.
Advances to farmers-You will be responsible for evaluating Amcos and Estate Finance requests based on information on the ground as well us ensuring ALL debts are paid as per signed contracts. In that line, you will coordinate signing of financing agreement as advised by FD and GM.
