About Durban University of Technology DUT Faculty of Applied Sciences
The Faculty of Applied Sciences spans the knowledge spectrum from conventional academic fields to rapidly evolving fields of study. The faculty comprises 10 academic departments with locally and globally relevant programmes. We are home to over 3000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and endeavour to create a safe environment grounded in the values of transparency, honesty, respect, integrity and accountability.
The Faculty offers a wide range of specialised degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and prides itself on being a multi-racial and culturally diverse environment for learning. With an employment of 81 dedicated full-time academic staff, of which, 56% are in possession of a doctoral degree, the faculty is without a doubt, equipped to prepare our student community for various science-related career opportunities. The faculty is continually improving the curriculum in conjunction with students, industry, and other stakeholders. This is undertaken to ensure that students receive an education that is relevant, career focused and achieves a balance between theory and practice. The Faculty has on offer 30 new qualifications ranging from Higher Certificates; Diplomas; Bachelor’s Degrees; Honours Degrees, Master’s and PhDs. Our qualifications are rigorously vetted and strengthened by our partnerships with Council on Higher Education, Department of Higher Education and Training, South African Qualifications Authority, as well as, other committees of DUT.
The faculty boasts a total of 17 NRF-Rated Scientists and 5 of 18 established Research Focus Areas at the university. The research sector is dominated by nine full professors and 13 associate professors within the faculty. Diligence and perseverance have seen the delivery of a record number of 43 PhD and 104 Master’s degrees between 2015 and 2020.
As South Arica prepares for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), the Faculty of Applied Sciences will continue to focus its research, teaching and learning activities on bringing competitive knowledge to the academic realm, industry and society.
