About Pathcare phlebotomy
Phlebotomy is the process of making a puncture in a vein, usually in the arm, with a cannula for the purpose of drawing blood. The procedure itself is known as a venipuncture, which is also used for intravenous therapy. A person who performs a phlebotomy is called a phlebotomist, although most doctors, nurses, and other technicians can also carry out a phlebotomy. In contrast, phlebectomy is the removal of a vein.
PathCare is a Cape Town based establishment that is comprised of laboratories specifically assigned in the field of pathology. Their laboratories are driven by research purposes and strive to achieve medical diagnostic achievements. The results attained are use by their partnering doctors who require specific information when making decisions and to improve the quality of medical management. Since the company’s formation, PathCare has been entrusted with a series of experiments that crosses multiple disciplines.
The PathCare Academy offers phlebotomy programme for the training of Phlebotomy Technicians (Further Education and Training Certificate: Phlebotomy Techniques, NQF level 4). The two-year course has been successfully offered by the Academy since its inception when we engaged South Africa’s first Phlebotomy Technician Learners. PathCare, led the process of developing this qualification with the support of the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA). The qualification is approved and authorised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and is run as a learnership under the auspices of the HWSETA.
