If you are a student, A South African Citizen and Youth residing in Gauteng between the age of 18 and 35 seeking for the Gauteng City Region Academy bursary programme you must apply for GCRA Bursary 2023 online application.
The GCRA bursary programme is open to all qualifying youth, with particular preference given to youth from Gauteng, who wish to study for an undergraduate and/or post-graduate programme at an accredited and registered Post School Education and Training institution in South Africa. The bursary covers full cost of study, with conditions, as stipulated in the bursary contract.
GCRA Applications for 2023 Are Open For Following:
- Students who completed matric and reside in Gauteng – Proof of residence required
- Students intending to study an undergraduate programme and have been accepted at an accredited PSET institution of learning and/or are currently registered for such.
- Students who want to pursue Post-Graduate studies and have been accepted at an accredited institution of higher learning

- Top Achievers from Gauteng Schools
- Top learner from no-fee paying schools in Gauteng
- Top 3 learner from LSEN schools in Gauteng
To Qualify for a GCRA bursary award you must be:
- A South African Citizen
- Youth residing in Gauteng between the age of 18 and 35
Key Requirements
- Certified copy of South African ID(by birth)
- Proof of Gauteng residence(utility bill or letter from ward councilor)
- Matric Certificate and or latest academic results(certified)
- Proof of income from parent(s) or guardian(s) or affidavit
- Letter of Motivation(not more than 2 pages)
- Proof of registration or acceptance letter from PSET institution
- Disability or medical report(where applicable)
The Top 3 Grade 12 learners from all No-Fee paying, SSIP and LSEN government schools in Gauteng qualify for a bursary to study at a recognised Higher Education Institution (HEI) or a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College.
To assure that your application is successfully submitted to the Gauteng City Region Academy, all online applications for gcra bursary must be submitted during the prescribed application period. You are also advised to attach all the required Application Documents.

Kindly follow these steps to submit your GCRA application with ease.
Profile Creation (Create a user account)
- Go to ( GCRA bursary registration): https://gcrabursary.gauteng.gov.za/
- Navigate to and click on the ‘Apply/Register’ link to start creating a user account
- Read carefully the criteria for the GCRA application that will appear after clicking on the Apply/Register button.
- Click on the ‘Next” to continue.
- Complete your details and create a password then click ‘Create’.
- The system will display a success message then you will receive an SMS confirming registration. Click ‘Ok’ to proceed.
Upon successful registration, you will receive an SMS to your phone stating that “ Hi, Please note that you have successfully Registered on GCRA Bursary Application System”. The message will come with your Login Details (Username & Password).
Login and Logout
- Click ‘Login’ and capture your username and password followed by clicking ‘Login’
- To log out of the system, click on your name, then click ‘Logout’
Personal Details: After successfully logging in, complete your profile starting with personal details
Address Details: Capture your address details (residential and postal)
High School Details: Capture your high school details
Matric Details: Capture your matric results
Next of Kin Details : Add your next of kin details and click submit
Once complete, the system will display a success message with a button to continue with your application.

Step 1: Qualification Details
- Capture your qualification details
Step 2: Other Sponsors
- If you do not have another sponsor, select ‘No’ and click ‘Save’
- If you have another sponsor, select ‘Yes’ and capture the funding information and click ‘Save’
Step 3: Upload Documents
- Upload all the required documents. Only upload pdf documents not more than 2MB.
Step 4: Declaration
- As the last step, you can select ‘Accept’ if you agree with the terms and conditions.
The system will display a success message and you will receive an SMS that your application has been received. Click ‘Ok’ to proceed.
You can also select ‘Decline’, to cancel the application if you disagree with the terms and conditions

How do I upload documents?
As you capture your details on the system, Save what has been captured and move to Next, until you see where the documents are loaded
Make sure that your documents are labeled and saved correctly, e.g. ID Copy, Matric Results, Motivation, Academic Transcript. Your documents need to be individually saved in PDF format (Adobe Acrobat). Each document/File size may not exceed 2 megabytes (MB).
Which document should I upload if I have upgraded my matric marks?
Upload both documents, the first and the upgraded document.

Do I need to create a new application if I have completed one year of study, but take a year off and want to return to my studies at a later time?
Yes, you need to, because your application would not have been active for that particular year you were not studying or funded.
What if I was funded by GCRA and I need to do a Postgraduate Degree? Do I start a new application or it is going to be treated as a renewal?
Yes, you need to apply again as this is a new application for a different qualification. Your details may still be on the system though, but you will need to update them.
