About University of Limpopo UL Faculty of Science And Agriculture
The Faculty offers FOURTEEN DHET-accredited undergraduate programmes of which SEVEN are in the SAES and the other SEVEN are shared amongst the THREE other Schools. These programmes range over many disciplines such as agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, and mathematical sciences including computer science; biological sciences, microbiology, botany and zoology, which are facilitated by sufficiently qualified academics. Currently all our undergraduate lectures are conducted multimodally and remotely. Whilst our new professional Water and Sanitation programme is in its fourth year, the Three basic (natural) science programmes are being reviewed with a view to replacing them in 2023. On the other hand, the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Agricultural Economics) and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Plant Production) are undergoing internal Quality Assurance review. These reviews are a guarantor for relevance and responsiveness.
All our undergraduate programmes articulate into postgraduate programmes which are supervised by a sizable pool of highly motivated senior academics. In fact, the Faculty is home to EIGHTEEN National Research Foundation rated scientists. There are THREE Research Chairs in the Faculty.
They are:
- Research Chair in Computational Modelling of Materials by Prof PE Ngoepe
- Research Chair in Ecosystem Health headed by Prof Luis-Powell
- Land Bank Chair in Plant Production headed by Prof Mashela
The Faculty has few other strategic units which bolster our provision of quality academic offerings, namely:
- Modern and sophisticated state-of-the-art laboratories which supplement theoretical learning in agricultural and natural sciences. Computer science and mathematical training are supported by the latest software;
- The Experimental Farm for research and experiential training of students
- The Centre for Rural Community Empowerment (CRCE) which is one of our arms on service learning
- Limpopo Agro-food Technology Station which is also an arm of service learning, especially support and training of small, medium enterprises (SMEs)
- The Science Education Centre (housing the Science Science) which is mainly responsible for popularisation of science through science fairs, learner and educator support in secondary school mathematics, life sciences and physical sciences
- Larry Leach Herbarium which is the biggest in the Limpopo Province and is responsible for collection and preservation of distinct plant species
The Faculty is also home to some of the outstanding female academics in the University in disciplines such as Chemistry, Botany, Statistics, Physics, Plant Production, Microbiology, Water Scienceand Zoology.
The Faculty is generally a beehive of scientific inquiry where science dreamers turn their dreams into reality.
That is why I welcome you to the Faculty of Science and Agriculture,” Where history is made before our eyes”
