About University of Pretoria UP Faculty of Engineering Built Environment and Information Technology
The Faculty is a leading source of locally relevant and internationally competitive programmes in Engineering, the Built Environment and Information Technology, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. It attracts high-quality students and staff, and offers extended programmes to facilitate inclusiveness. It is well resourced in terms of teaching and research facilities, and houses several research institutes. The Faculty maintains close links with industry that supports both the teaching and research programmes. The multidisciplinary nature of the Faculty facilitates interaction across disciplines in both teaching and research activities.
From humble beginnings in 1956 when 64 students enrolled, the previous Faculty of Engineering and the present School of Engineering have experienced remarkable growth and development. In 1971 it became the largest faculty of engineering in the country. Presently, with registrations of approximately 5 700 undergraduate and 1 500 postgraduate students, it is cited in the International Science Index as among the top 1% of engineering schools worldwide. The remarkable achievements of the School will be celebrated with great pride during 2016.
During the anniversary year a celebration programme will be presented with the purpose of honouring the founders of the Faculty, reflection on our outstanding achievements and milestones, acknowledgement of our supporters and sponsors, and drawing inspiration and motivation for the future advancement of the School.
