About Ikungi District Council (DC)
A brief history of Ikungi District Council.
March 02, 2012 Hon. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete President of the United Republic of Tanzania through GN No. 73 announced the creation of Ikungi District and on May 03, 2013 Hon. Mizengo Kayanza Pinda Prime Minister through GN. Na. 96 announced the Official Establishment of Ikungi District Council. Ikungi District Council is derived from Singida District Council. The Council officially started performing its duties on 01/07/2013.
Brief information about Ikungi District Council
Ikungi District Council is one of the 6 Singida Regional Councils. The council is located between 40 and 60 degrees Latitude south of the equator, 340 degrees and 350 degrees East latitude. It receives an average rainfall of 600-700 mm per year with temperatures between 15oC-30oC.
Bordering Tabora Region (Uyui District) West, Singida Municipality North, Singida North-East District, Iramba District North-West, Dodoma Region (Chemba District) South East and Manyoni District in the South.
1.1 Administration
The Council has an area of 8,860 Km2 divided into 2 constituencies, Singida West Constituency and Singida East Constituency. In addition, the District has 4 Divisions, 28 Wards, 101 Villages, 545 Suburbs and 53,367 Households.
1.2 Population
The council has a population of 272,959 (Census 2012) of which 136,178 are males or 49.9% and females are 136,781 or 50.1%. The average population growth is 2.4 percent per year, the average population is between 5 to 6 per household. For the year 2017 the population is estimated (Projection) to be 309,030 men 154,174 (49.8%) and women 154,8578 (50.2%).
1.3 Economic activities.
85% of Ikungi residents depend on Agriculture and Livestock as the main economic activity and their annual income is Tshs 720,000 / = per person.
The food crops grown are Sorghum, Wheat, Maize, Rice, Sorghum, Sweet Potatoes, Cassava and Peanuts and commercial ones are Sunflower, Cotton and Sesame.
In terms of pastoralism, the people of Ikungi raise cattle, cattle, goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs and chickens
