About Longido District Council (DC)
Longido District is one of the six districts in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. It was created in 2007 from part of Monduli District. The administrative seat is the town of Longido. Mount Longido is located within the boundaries of the district.
To underscore this, at the district stakeholder workshop in 2001, Longido District Council (LDC) within Longido District council is one of Councils of Arusha Region since 1st July, 2007. The District was born out of splitting the former Monduli District. Longido is expecting to provide high quality and responsive services to its district population, which is spread throughout 7,782 square kilometres. The fundamental changes taking place within the context of the local government reform programme required the district council to adopt new ways of organizing is activities, people and resources. The vision for the reform agenda is that; the district council as an institution of democratically elected representative becomes an autonomous organ that will deliver services according to locally defined needs, though within the national policy framework. Local government in Tanzania has had a chequered history, which can be categorized in five faces; pre-independent, in which the emphasis was placed on economic viability to the detriment of democracy, post independence to 1965 in which more focus was given to democratizing local government and expending the network to all district in Tanzania, 1966-1972 during which period local government authorities were dismantled in order to facilitate a policy which aimed to centralize the provision of services and distribute equally from the centre, 1972-1983 during which district development councils, wards and villages were instituted to support centre government, 1984- onwards which saw the reinstatement of thez present local government in order to encourage participation from civil society.
As a consequence, Longido district council has been undergoing a parading shift which involves; improving services delivery which is the main reason behind the existence of a local authority, committed democratically elected representatives and encouraging community participation.the framework of the national vision, agreed on the district development vision and mission as stated hereunder:
