Job Description

Founded in 1956, The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organization providing direct assistance to conflict-affected populations – refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and host communities – in more than 40 countries around the world. DRC has been implementing emergency response projects in Tanzania since the onset of the Burundi refugee crisis in 2015 in three refugee camps in the Kigoma Region at the border with Burundi. DRC’s integrated projects for refugees, asylum seekers and host communities comprise sectors such as Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM), Protection, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Shelter and infrastructure, General Food Distribution (GFD) and Livelihoods.

 

Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly qualified Protection officer will be responsible for coordinating nutrition services to people with specific needs through proper assessment of specific nutrition needs and ensuring linkage with health and nutrition mandated organizations for continued nutrition support. The protection officer will work in close collaboration with protection assistants and with supervision of Integrated protection team leader.

 

Responsibilities:

Identify clients/beneficiaries at significant nutritional risk, identifying nutritional objectives and schedule the high risk follow up clinic for in depth nutritional counseling.
Ensure proper identification and referral of all people with chronic illness who needs more nutrition support to the nearest hospital
Ensure that home visits are made according to protocol (for absent/defaulter as well as all people with chronic illness who don’t show improvements and or needs more nutritional support.
Ensure that proper explanations are given to the mothers/caretakers according to their patient’s nutritional status and treatment routine needed
Ensure that sensitization sessions/health talks with small groups of mothers/caregivers and patients on specific topics are organized according to the planning
Organize community mobilization and sensitization activities to the targeted group/communities assigned and identify patients who present a severe nutrition risk to be given special care.
Work with and support Incentive workers to ensure nutrition education messages are carried out during the home visits and any organized meetings with the beneficiaries
Conduct and propose different activities for PSN and their care takers according to the nutrition needs Identified.
Influence follow up on correct dosage of medications according to the systematic treatment protocol, medical prescriptions and nutritional requirements for people living with chronic illness.
Check and encourage the stimulation and psychological support provided by caretakers of people living with chronic illness.
Ensure proper referral process for cases that needs further nutrition treatment and support.
Participating in implementing outreach programmes as planned.
Ensure IEC material is available and used properly

Programming & Operations

Ensure efficient and effective program implementation while following the budget and work plan
Participate in preparing monthly/quarterly/annual highlights/reports and proposals and budgets for donors
Take initiative on procurement, working with Protection Team Leader and Protection Manager to ensure smooth procurement process and correct use of budget spending.
Coordination and representation

Collaborate with relevant internal and external technical experts on sector relevant issues
Represent DRC at meetings and other relevant technical coordination meetings
Ensure integration with other DRC sectors, such as Camp Coordination and Camp Management livelihoods, WASH, and General Food Distribution (GFD).

Project development

Asist in developing project plans and budgets for funding
Work with Protection Coordinator to develop projects tools
Project implementation and reporting
Work with MEAL department to monitor and evaluate project

Logistics/Finance

Support the monitoring of financial commitments and expenditures against budgets and provide timely feedback on budget follow-up
Plan and coordinate proactively logistics and movements of staff from and to different operational areas
Initiate procurements and ensure their execution
Ensure distribution plans are prepared and shared with logistics in a timely manner.

About you

Experience and technical competencies:

2-year work experience in related field
previous experience working with refugees – preferable
previous experience working in international organizations – preferable
Diploma or bachelor’s degree in public health, Nutrition, or any related field
English (spoken and written – very good)
Kiha (spoken – good) – preferable
