Role Reports to: Class Teacher / Assistant Head

The teaching assistant should assist with students, admin and the upkeep of the classroom under the direction of the lead classroom teacher. All teaching assistants also share the responsibility for the positive development and functioning of the school, for the establishment of a reputation for excellence, and for maintaining constructive relationships with all the school’s constituencies and the host community. Our teaching assistants should be effective and reflective, with a desire to be involved in the planning process, where possible, and to consider individual student needs and school policies at all times. They should genuinely like being with young people during scheduled classes, activities and duty time, being prepared to go the extra mile for our students in terms of their co-curricular and boarding involvement. It takes enthusiasm and energy to sustain the full life of a vibrant international boarding school with its considerable time demands and rewards.

Teaching Assistants are expected to:

  • Promote and contribute to the school’s aims (mission, vision, values, policies).
  • Promote a positive school culture that is happy, purposeful and productive.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Liaise effectively between teachers, tutors, admin, managers and leaders.
  • Support students, teachers and other school employees.

  • Undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching Assistants will:

Support for pupils

  • motivate and stimulate children’s learning abilities, often encouraging learning through experience.
  • following a child’s IEP to ensure his/her learning needs are catered for.
  • provide varying levels of individual attention, reassurance, and support with learning tasks as appropriate to each pupils’ needs.
  • monitor each pupil’s responses and modify or adapt the learning activities both to suit their needs and to achieve the intended learning outcomes.
  • clarify and explain instructions as necessary.
  • assist with the development of children’s personal/social and language abilities;
  • support the development of children’s basic skills, including physical coordination, speech and communication.
  • encourage children’s mathematical and creative development through stories, songs, games, drawing and imaginative play.
  • develop children’s curiosity and knowledge.
  • maintain constant awareness of the needs of additional language learners.
  • demonstrate knowledge of individual students, including their social and emotional needs.
  • be responsible, within lessons, for students’ health and safety and welfare during lessons according to school policies.
  • teach a small number of lessons as required by the school or requested by the TA.

Support for teachers

  • develop and produce visual aids and teaching resources;
  • organise learning materials and resources and making imaginative use of resources;
  • Assist with preparation of materials for lessons.
  • Assist the classroom teacher with the learning needs of individual students and/or groups.
  • Provide detailed and regular feedback about the children to the teacher
  • Contribute to the maintenance of children’s progress records
  • Monitor pupil’s responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement as directed.
  • Administer routine assessments and undertake routine marking of children’s work
  • File away children’s worksheets.
  • Glue worksheets in books.
  • Cover new books.
  • Photocopy relevant materials as required.

Support for the curriculum

  • Teach a reasonable number of lessons as appropriate. Complete planning and evaluation of this in conjunction with the class teacher.
  • Support the use of ICT in the classroom and ICT labs.
  • Maintain an environment of respect and rapport, engaging students actively in their own learning.
  • Ensure all areas of the classroom are kept tidy.
  • Ensure reading scheme books are well organised and well kept.
  • Ensure teaching and learning resources are well cared for.

Support in the lunch hall

  • Organise the entry of the pupils into the lunch hall.
  • Organise and supervising the washing of hands and hygiene of all Lower and upper primary pupils.
  • Maintain adequate standards of table manners and eating habits.
  • Assist pupils, where necessary, with the proper use of cutlery, drinking facilities
  • Assist with the cutting of meat and other food items for Lower primary pupils.
  • Encourage the pupils to leave the table clean.
  • Ensure the dining areas are left clean and tidy.

Support in the playground and other outdoor areas

  • Supervise pupils before school, at break times and lunch times, in accordance with the duty rota.
  • Arrange supervision so you move around amongst the children within the area you are covering.
  • Engage with the children in activities which promote healthy and active lifestyles.
  • Regularly rotate activities on offer to the children.
  • Promote the inclusion of all pupils
  • Maintain discipline during the lunch break and to promote adherence to the school’s behaviour
  • policies.Reporting all accidents/illnesses to the senior supervisory assistant.

Support for the Boarding House when on afternoon boarding duty

  • Ensure all Primary boarders have received a snack and drink after school.
  • Supervise and support pupils with their homework.
  • Arrange suitable educational activities for pupil’s who finish homework early.
  • Maintain respect and discipline during prep and promote adherence to the boarding house behaviour policy.

Support for the school

  • display pupils work to reflect their achievement.
  • supervise pupils on outings and visits as required.
    attend staff meetings as required.
  • with full regard for safeguarding policies and procedures, be ready to listen and respond to any student who needs to speak to you to share a concern, completing paperwork as necessary
  • guide students on a day-to-day basis and aim to build a trusting relationship with each student.
  • provide pastoral care and support to children and providing them with a secure environment to learn
  • ensure the health and safety of children and staff is maintained during all activities, both inside and outside the school.
  • any other general duty that the teacher or Assistant Head feels necessary.

Experience:

  • High School qualification essential.
  • Post High School qualification is desirable (i.e. certificate / diploma / degree).
  • Minimum 2 years in a school is desirable.
  • Fluent English speaker essential.
    Experience in supporting pupils in classroom environment, one on one or with Additional Learning Needs (will be an added advantage)
