About Namtumbo District Council (DC)
Namtumbo District Council is one of the five Districts of Ruvuma Region in southern Tanzania, where the Council was established in accordance with the law on 02/08/2002 and was given official approval for the establishment of Council No.366 on 09/11/2006 to separate from Songea District Council. Namtumbo is a popular name for Mtemi who came from Mozambique and lived in Namtumbo and had a good reputation something that made him famous. The council has an administrative area of 20,375.10 square kilometers and occupies 1/3 of the total area of the region, Namtumbo District is estimated to have 21 People per square kilometer.
The Council is located between Latitude 9’17 ‘and Latitude 11’45’ south of the equator and also between Longitude 35’57 ‘and Longitude 36’52’ east of GMT. It is bordered by Songea in the West, Ulanga District (Morogoro Region) in the North, Tunduru District and Liwale (Lindi Region) in the East. To the south are the Ruvuma River and the international border of Mozambique.
Namtumbo District is located on the main tarmac connecting Songea – Tunduru-Masasi-Mtwara / Lindi-Dar Es Salaam which is accessible throughout the rainy season and the distance from Namtumbo to Songea Town is 70 km. Namtumbo District is less than 1 meter 200-300 south sea level and about 300-500 meters north sea level
Weather
Namtumbo district has an average temperature of 20-25 degrees Celsius during the day and 15-17 degrees Celsius at night. The warm period is the months of September, October, November and December. The winter period is the months of June, July and August. The district has an average rainfall of 800,000 to 1,200 mm per year, with rainfall beginning in late November and ending in May the following year and rainfall decreases in the lowlands and increased in the highlands. 2/3 of the entire District Area is surrounded by Forests, Miyombo Trees, Shrubs, Grass and the world’s largest park known as ” THE SELOUS GAME RESERVE ” which provides protection to millions of wildlife also the area is well known for its attractions. Tourists as well as beekeeping.
Population
According to the 2012 Population and Housing Census Namtumbo District has a total of approximately 201,639 people out of which 103,304 or 51% are women and 98,335 or 49% are men with an increase of 1.4 percent per annum. Based on national statistics in 2012, the National Bureau of Statistics estimated that 225,862 people of whom 110,148 are males and 115,714 are females by 2017 an increase of 5.5 percent per annum, with more people scattered along the highway. Songea- Tunduru, Mtwarapachani-Lusewa, Namtumbo-Mgombasi and Mageuzi- Hanga- Bed. The workforce is a group of 15-54 years making up 54% of the total population.
