MSC. RESEARCH FUND SCHOLARSHIP UNDER THE “IMPROVING YIELD AND QUALITY OF MEAT FROM SLAUGHTER CATTLE IN TANZANIA THROUGH INNOVATIVE FEEDING PACKAGES PROJECT”. The Sokoine University of Agriculture, through the Department of Animal, Aquaculture and Range Sciences has secured research grants from the Commission of Science and Technology (COSTECH) for the purpose of conducting research on improving yield and quality of meat from local cattle strains in Tanzania.

The project will focus on development of cost effective feed packages based on locally available feed resources in order to: (1) reduce production costs, (2) improve competitiveness of locally produced beef in niche market through strategic finishing of selected strains of Tanzania Short Horn Zebu (TSZ) cattle, (3) determine suitability of beef from different strains and feed packages for industrial value addition, and (4) build the capacity of beef stakeholders for effective management of local beef cattle and processing of produced meat. The project duration is two years.

Feeding experiment will be conducted at Mgolole Agro-processing Company Ltd in Morogoro and at Kongwa ranch (NARCO) in Dodoma.  Mapping of core value addition processes will be done in three major metropolitan cities in Tanzania namely Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Mwanza. Assessment of suitability of beef from different strains and feed packages will involve selected meat processors study areas.
